In recognition of his distinguished career as a journalist and author, and his contributions to Queen’s University, the Ottawa community, and Canada, Jeffrey Simpson, BA’71, LLD’05, has been awarded the 2014 Agnes Benidickson Award from the Ottawa Branch of the Queen’s University Alumni Association.
Mr Simpson is a critically acclaimed journalist who has been the national affairs columnist at the Globe & Mail for thirty years. An award-winning author of eight books, Mr Simpson’s work has won all three of Canada's leading literary prizes: the Governor-General's Award for Non-Fiction Book Writing, the National Magazine Award for Political Writing, and the National Newspaper Award for Column Writing (two-time award winner). He also received the Hyman Solomon Award for Excellence in Public Policy Journalism. In 2000 Mr Simpson was invested as an Officer of the Order of Canada in recognition of his contributions to Canadian journalism.
As a Queen’s student, he was involved with CFRC Radio and the Debating Club. Elected President of his class in 1971, he was inducted into the Tricolour Society for his service to the University that same year. His volunteer service to Queen’s continued as an alumnus. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees (1990-96) and University Council (1991-97).
