The Queen鈥檚 community is mourning the loss of Claire Leggett, a donor and ambassador for the university who passed away on April 4 in Kingston at the age of 83.
Claire was the wife of Principal Emeritus William Leggett, LLD鈥04, who served as the university鈥檚 17th principal from 1994 to 2004.
After arriving on campus with her husband, she quickly immersed herself in tricolour culture and became a champion for Queen鈥檚. She was actively involved in many university functions and would frequently travel to attend Queen鈥檚-related events.
Claire was a major supporter of the Queen鈥檚 Bands, donating to help members purchase new uniforms. She was made an honorary 鈥淏andsie鈥 in recognition of her dedication.
She established to help students in financial need take part in study-abroad experiences, such as a formal Queen's exchange or enrolment at Bader College in England.
In recognition of her many contributions to Queen鈥檚, she received the 2003 Distinguished Service Award, which is awarded by University Council to people who make Queen鈥檚 better through their extraordinary contributions.
Her award citation described her as a Queen鈥檚 ambassador who warmly welcomed thousands of people during many university functions. She travelled the globe winning friends and funds to strengthen this university, using her enthusiasm and her own considerable generosity to inspire others.
In 2003, Claire and William were co-recipients of the John Orr Award, which honours people who have made significant contributions to the life and welfare of the university.
She leaves behind her husband, William, son David (Jennifer), son John (Cathy), and three grandchildren.
