Unlike many of the Bader family鈥檚 gifts to Queen鈥檚 University, the recent donation of a dozen paintings from The Bader Collection wasn鈥檛 meticulously planned. Instead, it was a spontaneous offer from Isabel Bader, LLD鈥07, to support an exhibition organized by a curator new to the university.
Shortly after Dr. Suzanne van de Meerendonk arrived at Queen鈥檚 in November 2020, she got to work planning an exhibition exploring the theme of isolation, one of the biggest concerns brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The new Bader Curator of European Art called the exhibition , and she searched through The Bader Collection to find paintings to include in it. 鈥淭here were two works that weren鈥檛 part of our collection at Queen鈥檚 that I thought would be perfect,鈥 Van de Meerendonk says.
So, she called Isabel Bader to see if she could borrow those paintings. 鈥淪he said she would be willing to lend them,鈥 says Van de Meerendonk, 鈥渂ut then she decided that she would rather gift them to us.鈥 Isabel then expanded on her offer. 鈥淪he indicated that she would be willing to add more works to the gift if I thought they could be helpful, either for this exhibition or for a future exhibition.鈥
Van de Meerendonk chose 10 paintings in addition to the two she had earmarked for Studies in Solitude. The paintings 鈥17th-century Dutch still lifes, Biblical scenes, and scenes from daily life 鈥 enhance the Agnes Etherington Art Centre鈥檚 ability to shed light on early modern European art, life, and material culture.
鈥淚 felt very spoiled as a curator,鈥 Van de Meerendonk says. 鈥淚t was such a generous gift to the university, and it was also a warm welcoming to my new position.鈥
Two of the paintings, Heyman Dullaert鈥檚 Young Scholar in his Study and A Woman Darning a Stocking by Jacob Vrel, are part of Studies in Solitude at Agnes until June 2022. The rest remain in Agnes鈥檚 vaults for now, but Van de Meerendonk is already making plans to incorporate them into future exhibitions.
In the meantime, you will soon be able to view all 12 paintings online as part of the initiative.
