Virtual event

Join Principal Deane, University Senators and Office of Indigenous Initiatives for the special virtual Polishing the Chain Ceremony.

鈥淧olishing the chain鈥 (Wampum Belt) ensures that a relationship does not become rusty and is a reaffirmation of the commitment between Queen鈥檚 and Indigenous peoples as ongoing and not just a moment in time. The friendship wampum belt was presented to 成人大片 Senate by the Clan Mothers at Tyendinaga, and the Grandmothers' Council in Kingston, on Mar. 7, 2017. This cherished symbol is now present at all Senate meetings, to represent the lasting covenant of peace and friendship.

Wampum translates to peace, friendship, and good minds.

Note: Wampum are traditionally beads made from shells.  Belts made of wampum are used to mark agreements, contracts, and commitments between peoples and are of particular significance when associated with treaties or covenants between Aboriginal peoples and European colonial powers.
