MacClement Lecture: Adam Shoalts

The Faculty of Education is thrilled to host professional adventurer and national bestselling author for this year鈥檚 . 

In his inspiring and exciting talk 鈥淩ediscovering the wild in our digital world,鈥 Dr. Shoalts outlines how we can appreciate the natural landscape around us in an increasingly digital world. A popular speaker and humourous storyteller, Dr. Shoalts shares insights into how our relationship with nature boosts happiness, productivity, and creates a sense of calm.

Dr. Adam Shoalts is a professional adventurer and the author of four national bestselling books. 

He has led expeditions for the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and Mountain Equipment Co-op, conducted archaeological digs, tracked endangered species, and completed a nearly 4,000 km solo journey across the Arctic.  

Dr. Shoalts has written about extensively on environmental issues such as deforestation and watershed pollution in Northern Canada. His writing career began with a column, 鈥淩eflections of a Naturalist,鈥 which addressed conservation issues and led to his award-winning books Alone Against the North and Beyond the Trees. A frequent guest on television, his work has been featured on sites such as the BBC, CNN, CTV, CBC, Reader鈥檚 Digest, the Washington Post, and The Guardian

An avid conservationist, Dr. Shoalts received the Niagara Region鈥檚 environmental award for his work to preserve local watersheds in 2008. In 2016, he was named a national champion of the Trans-Canada Trail and in 2018 Explorer-in-Residence of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. 

Dr. Shoalts received his BA from Brock University and then completed his master鈥檚 degree and PhD at McMaster University.


The MacClement Lectureship

The MacClement Lectureship was established in 1985 by friends and family in memory of William T. MacClement to support an annual lecture series and is maintained through the continued generosity of friends of the faculty. 


The Queen鈥檚 Lecture Series 

The 2023 MacClement Lectureship is pleased to partner with the Queen鈥檚 Lecture Series. The Queen鈥檚 Lecture Series showcases several donor-funded lectures from across the university throughout the year and provides alumni and the broader Queen鈥檚 community with increased access to some of the university鈥檚 top researchers and internationally respected visiting scholars.
