I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography and Planning. My current research is focused on cities and the natural environment, Natural Heritage Systems, ecosystem services, and community engagement. I am currently researching alongside Dr. Betsy Donald and I am the project manager of Kingston in Focus, an online interactive dashboard created by ���˴�Ƭ in collaboration with the City of Kingston, Kingston Economic Development, and the Kingston and Area Association of Museums, Art Galleries and Historic Sites. The dashboard serves to support data-driven policy development while encouraging community participation in local democracy. 

I completed my PhD in Geography at Queen’s University in 2021.  My dissertation research investigated Natural Heritage Systems (NHS) within high growth urban areas in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area (Region of Halton), along with current approaches to NHS planning using detailed document analysis, surveys, interviews and workshops with NHS and planning stakeholders in Ontario.  This research will serve to inform NHS planning practice.  

I am Registered Professional Planner (RPP) with 25 years of land use and environmental planning experience and a decade of University level teaching Geography and Planning.  I have taught within the undergraduate geography and  Master of Science in Planning program at the University of Toronto, as well as Environmental Services in the Master of Urban and Regional Planning program in the School of Urban and Regional Planning at ���˴�Ƭ.

RESEARCH INTERESTS:
I am currently collaborating with the Kingston Economic Development Corporation, City of Kingston, and the Kingston Association of Museums, Art Galleries and Historic Sites to create a data-driven decision-making tool that can support community planning and help measure municipal resilience to COVID 19.  We are developing an online interactive ‘dashboard’ to provide a range of indicators that will allow planners to compare the municipality with federal and provincial indicators.  The dashboard indicators are grouped by overarching themes of Business Resilience, Employment, Community Vulnerabilities and Supports, Mobility, Environment and Sustainability, Housing, and Cultural Heritage.  We are including links to recent Queen’s University, Kingston-centric research (dissertations, theses) related to the dashboard themes that will provide users with the opportunity to explore methodologies and analyses related to individual research themes. The dashboard incorporates advanced computing techniques including visualization to animate the dashboard and make it accessible to a wide range of users. The indicators will provide insight into baseline and historic information and illustrate Kingston’s pandemic resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic, the inequities exacerbated by the pandemic and the on-the-ground impacts influencing the everyday lives of Kingston residents. The dashboard will ultimately provide a platform of gathered data which will help to inform policy and strengthen Kingston’s ability to (re)build post-pandemic.
