Congratulations to Dr. Rebecca Hall on being selected as the winner of the 2023 for her book Refracted Economies (University of Toronto Press, 2022).
As noted by the Global Development Section at the International Studies Association, "Refracted Economies (University of Toronto Press, 2022) is a gendered analysis of the diamond mining industry in the Canadian sub arctic, and the experiences of the northern Indigenous communities upon whose lands these mines were established. Taking a decolonizing and feminist approach to political economy, the book centres on Indigenous women鈥檚 social reproduction labour and the ways in which caring labour tie together sites of (capitalist) work, home, and care. The fieldwork was conducted through community-based research in partnership with The Native Women鈥檚 Association of the Northwest Territories and draws upon documentary analysis, interviews, and talking circles."
Dr. Rebecca Hall is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Global Development Studies. Her research interests include resource extraction and labour; social reproduction and care; settler colonialism; and gender violence. Dr. Hall has been researching with northern Indigenous communities for the past 15 years and is a member of 鈥淲e Will Not Be Banned From Our Land鈥, a research network led by Dedaaats鈥檈etsaa: T艂谋台ch谦 Research and Training Network.
