Joint Honours in DEVS聽(DEVS-A-BAH) after May 1, 2024

The Joint Honours degree is intended for students who would like a strong concentration in Global Development Studies in combination with an equally strong concentration in another discipline. Joint Honours degrees can be completed with most other departments in Arts and Science. Students apply to the Joint Honours plan after their first year in Arts and Science and should have completed DEVS 100 or DEVS 101. 

For students who entered the DEVS plan after May 1, 2024, a DEVS Joint Honours degree plan consists of 42 units in DEVS and DEVS-Eligible-Language courses as outlined in the chart below or on the Faculty of Arts and Science webpage.

If there are any discrepancies between the information listed on the DEVS website and the the academic calendar will prevail.

CORE COURSES (21.0 units)

Select 6.00 units from the following:

  • DEVS 100/6.0:  Canada and the "Third World" OR
  • DEVS 101/3.0:  Development Studies in Global Perspective AND DEVS 102/3.0 Canada in the World OR
  • DEVS 105/3.0:  Development Studies in Global Perspective AND DEVS at the 200 level or above/3.0 

Complete 3.00 units from the following:

INDG 101/3.0: Foundations in Indigenous Knowledges and Perspectives
DEVS 220/3.0: Introduction to Indigenous Studies

Complete the following:

DEVS 230/3.0: The Global Political Economy of Development
DEVS 240/3.0: Culture and Development

Complete the following:

DEVS 340/3.0: Theories of Development

Complete the following:

DEVS 492/3.0: Topics in Development Studies I

OPTION COURSES (21.0 units)

Complete 9.00 units of the following:

DEVS at the 300-level or above

Complete 9.00 units of the following:

DEVS at the 200-level or above

NOTES
Work-study option: DEVS Major and Medial students are eligible to apply for the independent work-study courses (DEVS 410*/411* and 420*)
International Study Option:  DEVS Major and Medial students are eligible to apply for the international study course DEVS 306/307
DEVS 501 (honours thesis) and DEVS 502: Directed reading course

Note that non-DEVS courses from the DEVS_Languages course lists are offered through other departments and may be subject to availability; DEVS students may not have enrolment priority.

Students pursuing a Joint Honours in Global Developmental Studies and Indigenous Studies may use INDG 101 or DEVS 220 toward their INDG plan, and request DEVS 250 be used as a replacement in the DEVS plan.

A maximum of 6.00 units from courses offered by other Faculties and Schools may be counted toward the program and/or Plan requirements. This includes courses in BMED, COMM, GLPH, HSCI, LAW, NURS, and courses offered by Smith Engineering.
