Ego sum, ego existo: Descartes' divisive legacy
As part of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre's spring programming surrounding the Singular Figures exhibition, Carlos Prado, Professor Emeritus (Philosophy), gave a talk on 鈥淒escartes鈥 Divisive Legacy.鈥 In his talk, Dr. Prado explained that the oft-quoted phrase, 鈥淐ogito, ergo sum鈥 (I think, therefore I am) was abandoned by Descartes for requiring a suppressed premise. Descartes revised the 鈥淐ogito鈥 statement to the 鈥淓go sum, ego existo鈥 statement.
