It probably shouldn鈥檛 surprise anyone to learn that Jacqueline Davies considers Socrates one 颅of her heroes. She is, after all, a professor of philosophy. But Dr. Davies has another hero, who has influenced her in ways Socrates never could.
Ms. Frizzle, the eccentric, adventuresome 颅third-grade teacher from the 鈥淢agic School Bus鈥 cartoon series, keeps Dr. Davies inspired as she encourages her students to 鈥渢ake chances, make mistakes, get messy!鈥
Dr. Davies鈥檚 ability to inspire her own students to learn fearlessly and embrace their mistakes has led to her selection as the 2015 recipient of the Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching.
鈥淛ackie鈥檚 classes always had a different feel to them,鈥 says Galen Watts (Artsci鈥15), the student who nominated her for the award. 鈥淭hey were democratic, un-hierarchical and inclusive.鈥
Dr. Davies began her career at Queen鈥檚 in 1990, in what was then the women鈥檚 studies program. 颅Today she is a continuing adjunct professor in the Department of Philosophy with a cross-appointment in gender studies and affiliations with cultural studies and Jewish studies. She also serves as acting head of the Department of Gender Studies.
And while she specializes in topics ranging from feminist thought to critical thinking and the insights of Emmanuel Levinas, she says the subject matter is always secondary to the 颅students. 鈥淚t鈥檚 really important to keep in mind that you鈥檙e not teaching a subject,鈥 she says. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e teaching people.鈥
This insight has shaped a nimble, mindful 颅approach to teaching which enables her to adapt to the needs of her students as she becomes aware of them. 鈥淚鈥檓 a very verbal learner,鈥 she says. 鈥淏ut I鈥檝e come to realize that not everybody has that style.鈥 After receiving feedback early in her career that her lectures weren鈥檛 visually stimulating, she began actively looking for ways to engage all types of learners. 鈥淣ow I incorporate a lot of material 鈥 film, music, things you can handle...鈥
Dr. Davies says the diverse approach is a 颅helpful counterpoint to some of the material she teaches. 鈥淎 lot of the ideas we discuss are threatening because they challenge beliefs that students have,鈥 she says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 important to help people feel comfortable when they鈥檙e having their beliefs challenged.鈥
She may not lead her students on field trips to the ocean floor or the inside of a beehive, but like her cartoon hero, she keeps them eagerly anticipating their next learning adventure. 鈥淚t was 颅always a fun surprise to arrive at Jackie鈥檚 class,鈥 颅Mr. Watts says. 鈥淵ou never knew precisely what she would come up with next.鈥
