The last two weeks marked the first return to “normal” for many of us. It was my first time returning to in-person and hybrid activities. But it was anything but “normal.” I am reflecting on our time and realizing that much of what was accomplished is a first step in a longer journey.
I participated in two of the four planning sessions – one in-person and one virtual. I witnessed our staff share their views on current challenges and roadblocks. Many issues came forward and were put on the table for the team to tackle. Deanna was present for all of the sessions and observed that clear themes have emerged. I’m grateful for the transparent and honest commentary offered by our teams. We can now begin together to address those things that are standing in our way.
At the same time, we had a moment to reflect on all that we have accomplished while in a global pandemic. I hope that everyone heard and digested that information. We are leading the way in many areas.
I travelled to Vancouver this week (another first: business travel) and Sara Franca and I spoke at the District 8 about the strategic direction of our alumni engagement teams. Deanna presented on our Building a Better Workplace initiative. Both sessions had a full house and the questions, feedback, and requests for additional connections were quite overwhelming and a reminder to me of all the opportunities ahead.
It was a big two weeks. It was draining and there is a great deal of work ahead of us. But I’m confident that we are on the right path.
Summerhill smudging ceremony
At 9 am on April 11, Elder Allen Doxtator - Te howis kwûnt will visit Summerhill and cleanse the space in a traditional Indigenous smudging ceremony. Those who are interested in learning and understanding more about smudging are welcome to attend. We will meet outside Summerhill West room 101 at 9 am. The office will officially open at 10 am if you do not plan to attend this ceremony.
