Description

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Institutional Grants (SIG) funding opportunity... provides annual grants to help eligible Canadian postsecondary institutions fund, through their own merit review processes, small-scale research and research-related activities by their faculty… in the social sciences and humanities and creative arts.

Of note, the SIG funding opportunity, through either of the Explore or Exchange Grants categories, supports research-creation, that is, creative research that results in artistic work(s). Creative expression may occur in various fields from visual and performing arts to new artistic practices.  Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must have a primary faculty appointment at Queen's (adjunct or tenure stream) for the duration of the grant. Researchers who maintain an affiliation with a Canadian postsecondary institution, but whose primary affiliation is with a non-Canadian institution, are not eligible to hold these grants.
  • Preference will be given to researchers who do not have an active external grant
  • Applicants may submit only one application per SIG competition and may not hold concurrent SIG funding
  • The work conducted with this funding must be in an area of study related to the social sciences and humanities and be consistent with the

Applications will be assessed against the following criteria, which must be addressed in your application:

  • Description of project, activities, and overall expected outcome
  • Impact of the expected project/activity outcomes 
  • A plan for the proposed SIG funded research leading to an application to one of the SSHRC funding opportunities listed below within two years of the commencement of the SIG grant.

Funding is available for research initiatives of two to five years providing stable support for long-term research initiatives. Enables scholars to address complex issues pertaining to individuals and societies, and to further our collective understanding.

Provides support for research in its initial stages for up to two years. Enables the development of new research questions, as well as experimentation with new methods, theoretical approaches and/or ideas.

Supports events and outreach activities geared toward short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives.

 Provides short-term and timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision-making at a single partner organization from the public, private or not-for-profit sector.

Provides support over one to three years to teams/partnerships, led by a project director, to:

  • develop research and/or related activities in the social sciences and humanities, including knowledge mobilization and the meaningful involvement of students and emerging scholars, by fostering new partnerships with existing and/or potential partners; or 
  • design and test new partnership approaches for research and/or related activities that may result in best practices or models that either can be adapted by others or have the potential to be scaled up to a regional, national or international level.
