Update Memo for ³ÉÈË´óƬ Retiree Members of the University Benefits Plan

To: Queen’s Retirees – Retiree Plan Members of the University Benefits Plan

Following a competitive Request for Proposals (RFP) process through the spring and summer 2019, Manulife has been selected as the new employee and retiree benefits provider for the university.

Manulife has substantial experience delivering group benefits programs to a wide range of companies and organizations. Current coverage levels for retirees remain unchanged.  In addition, we are pleased to announce that there will be some updated plan design features introduced for retirees with the timing of the move to the new provider, Manulife, in the Spring of 2020.

The updated plan features for Optional Retiree Benefits (premium fully paid by retirees):

·       Optional Life Insurance

·       Optional Spousal Life Insurance

·       Optional Retiree out-of-province Emergency Top up benefit (Retirees age 65 and over):  top up from 80% maximum to 100% coverage on a one-time opt-in decision by retiree.

·       Optional Dental care

In addition, a Pay Direct Drug Card will be introduced for retirees as part of the supplementary medical benefit (first payor continues to be the Ontario Drug Benefit, ODB).

These updated plan design features will be introduced with the timing of the move to the new provider, Manulife, in the Spring of 2020.  Further details including rates and timing will be shared in the coming months.

The university will be working with implementation specialists at Manulife to develop an implementation plan that includes communications with plan members.  For additional information about the Employee Benefit review and FAQs go to the HR website.

Until the transition to Manulife occurs in the Spring of 2020, Great-West Life will continue to be the university benefit provider and there are no changes to the existing benefit plan coverages or the claim submission process.

A Gazette article to announce the successful proponent to the University community will be published shortly.

Steve
