The COVID-19 pandemic has led to worldwide shortages of personal protective equipment and, very early on, products like hand sanitizer. This has a great impact on hospitals where these products are critical to limiting the spread of the virus, especially for frontline health care workers and patients.

Innate Immune Memory in Asthma and the Quest for Targeted Immunotherapies

Dr. Eva Kaufmann’s research explores a new concept in innate immunity, termed "innate immune memory", or "trained immunity". Her lab studies whether allergen exposure induces long-lasting epigenetic changes in hematopoietic stem cells and innate immune cells, such as monocytes. Such epigenetic reprogramming can be a reason why asthmatic individuals experience exacerbations and are more susceptible to severe clinical trajectories of respiratory infections.

Deciphering complex immune pathways

Immune cells allow the human body to exist in a stable chemical and physical state (homeostasis) and have the ability to adapt as we develop and age. But changes to immune cell biology, for example, from chronic perturbations, alter homeostasis, leading to disease. To understand how and why these changes occur to our stable state, we must apply an interdisciplinary approach that combines physiology and immunology and need to decipher the complex immune pathways involved in cancer and chronic disease.
