The COVID-19 pandemic has threatened our health and communities, including some of our most vulnerable populations, such as the elderly. Have we failed or succeeded in our duty to safeguard the most vulnerable members of our society? What has the national and global response to the pandemic taught us about our preparedness for such a virus? How will the pandemic influence our long-term strategy for healthy aging? These are some of the important questions we examined during Conversations Confronting COVID-19: Aging, the second session in the virtual event series.

Recently, Dr. Wolfrom published a blog in the Canadian Medical Association Journal outlining tips for how physicians can cope in periods of stress and uncertainty. The blog was based on an email he distributed to his colleagues in Department of Family Medicine as they prepared for the arrival of COVID-19. The Gazette has received permission to republish these tips and adapt them for a broader audience.

Diabetes on the rise in First Nations populations

According to the report, developed jointly by the Chiefs of Ontario (COO) and ICES, the increase is particularly concerning as there is a rising, disproportionate number of First Nations children affected by diabetes.

Richard Birtwhistle and Big Data: Transforming Medicine

Richard Birtwhistle is a professor in the Queen’s Department of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences, the director of the university’s Centre for Studies in Primary Care, and the chair and principal investigator of the Canadian Primary Care Sentinel Surveillance Network (CPCSSN). The network collects patient information stored in electronic medical records (EMR) of primary care practitioners across Canada. Using complex algorithms, CPCSSN brings the data from these different EMR systems together into a consistent format. This enables researchers to use those data to answer questions about the incidence and treatment of diabetes, hypertension, depression, chronic obstructive lung disease, osteoarthritis and other chronic diseases that Canadian family physicians commonly deal with.
