The transmission and documentation of traditional knowledge and skills is of great importance to Inuit, especially considering the continuing social, environmental, and economic changes in the Arctic. I am examining how Inuit traditional knowledge is generated and shared through a case study of an existing project in Ulukhaktok called Nunamin Illihakvia, which means "learning from the land" in Inuinnaqtun. Participants from other Inuvialuit communities were invited to travel to Ulukhaktok in February 2020 to participate in cultural activities that promoted discussion on what a cultural learning program should include. This photo shows our first trip out on Queen's Bay together.

Queen’s Indigenous health researcher named Indspire Award winner

The first Indigenous midwife in Canada to earn a doctoral degree will be recognized with a 2020 Indspire Award – the most prestigious career excellence award bestowed by the Indigenous community on its own people. Queen’s University’s Karen Lawford has been named one of this year’s 12 outstanding Indigenous leaders, and will be honoured with the Indspire Award for Health at a nationally-televised ceremony on March 6.

Dr. Janet Jull is an occupational therapist and Assistant Professor in the School of Rehabilitation Therapy in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Queen’s University. Her research focuses on developing and evaluating shared decision-making tools and approaches to support client-centred care, with a particular focus on cancer care. In all of her research, Dr. Jull works in collaboration with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis researchers and communities.

Dr. Dylan Robinson, Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Arts and a xwelmexw (Stó:lō) artist–researcher, finds it hard to avoid signs that affirm Canada’s history of colonization and continued colonial legacy across most Canadian and American cities. Such signs are ubiquitous, from street signs named after city “founders” and statues of famous statesmen and explorers, to buildings named after companies that profit from extracting resources across Indigenous territories.
