On a very hot day, I went to the Adelabu Market in Ibadan, Nigeria, to meet Sarah. Several phone calls later, we found each other. She brought me inside a nearly abandoned plaza. “Less noisy,” she said. We climbed up to the highest floor. During the interview, she told me her livelihood as a market woman funded her children’s education. Rain or shine, she is at the market every day, under her umbrella. When we finished the interview, I looked down. What a view! As I snapped a photo, I wondered: “What are the stories of the other people under the umbrellas?”

The learning should never stop

With schools closed for at least the next three weeks, Queen’s University researcher Lynda Colgan says it’s critical for parents and guardians to continue to keep young people engaged through informal learning opportunities. This will help them to feel more positive and prepared about returning to the classroom, when school is back in session.

Dr. Liying Cheng is a professor of teaching English as a second/foreign language and Peer Research Consultant in the Faculty of Education at Queen’s University. She is also the director of the Assessment and Evaluation Group at Queen’s and was a recipient of the 2017 Prize for Excellence in Research, Queen’s signature internal research honour. Her research interests include the impact of large-scale testing on instruction, the relationship between assessment and instruction, and teaching and learning English for academic purposes.

Equity has always been a top priority for Dr. Heather Aldersey, Canada Research Chair in Disability-Inclusive Development, Queen’s National Scholar in international community-based rehabilitation, and assistant professor in the School of Rehabilitation Therapy. A researcher in community-based rehabilitation (CBR), a discipline focused on supporting people with disabilities and their families and communities in low- and middle-income countries, Aldersey works with families and people with disabilities to identify the problems they face.

Lynda Colgan + Math = Mathemagic!

“You’ll hear people say all the time they can’t do math, and they think this is okay,” says Lynda Colgan, associate professor of education at Queen’s and director of the Community Outreach Centre. “In contrast, it’s socially unacceptable not to be able to read.” Colgan thinks one reason for the tolerance of math illiteracy is that most of the math that people do on a daily basis is invisible. Invisible math is a problem.
