My research concerns the history of education with a particular emphasis on curriculum crises. More recently, I have been examining how schools evolved throughout the Byzantine, or Late Roman, period. I have travelled to archives in Istanbul, Mount Athos, Rome, Venice, and the Vatican to retrieve primary sources too long-forgotten or remote to be common in western historical narratives. In the midst of medieval archives and ancient art, I stumbled upon this contemporary work of art. Raising my eyes to see it in the midst of one of Athens鈥� most economically depressed squares, I found the transcendent.
