On August 25, 2023, a hybrid conference titled "50-Year Relationship of Vietnam and Canada: Look Back and Forward" marked the commemoration of five decades of bilateral ties between Vietnam and Canada. The Vietnam Institute of American Studies (VIAS), a division of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, hosted the event in Vietnam.
Queen鈥檚 University played a pivotal role as a co-organizer of the conference: Vice-Provost, Global Engagement, Dr. Sandra den Otter, representing Queen鈥檚 University, conveyed her remarks through a video message. In-person participation was highlighted by Dr. Emily Hill (Associate Professor, History), who delivered a keynote address titled "The Greening of Industrialized Agriculture: Prospects for Cooperation between Canada and Vietnam." Additionally, Drs. Bernadette Resurreccion and Jonathan Shaw from the Department of Global Development Studies, and Dr. Zhiyao Zhang, Director of the Asia Liaison Office at Queen鈥檚 University, attended virtually.
The conference was sponsored and supported by Canadian Embassy in Hanoi, His Excellency, Mr. Shawn Steil, the Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam, was present and delivered remarks, reinforcing the robust diplomatic relationship. His Excellency, Mr. Pham Vinh Quang, the Ambassador of Vietnam to Ottawa, also joined and virtually addressed the attendees.
Queen鈥檚 University is committed to deepening strategic relations with Vietnam. The co-organization of this conference event is part of Queen鈥檚 growing involvement in Vietnam, solidified through strategic partnerships. Notably, Queen鈥檚 University has signed a multi-faculty student exchange agreement with VinUniversity in Hanoi, and formal relations have been established with University of Science, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU), Ho Chi Minh City, and the University of Science and Technology, Hanoi. These linkages align with Vice-Provost, Global Engagement's efforts to execute Queen鈥檚 University's recently launched Global Engagement Strategic Plan 2023-2028.
