Emma Bock鈥檚 research, under the supervision of Dr. Scott Berthelette, is concerned with the material lives of French colonial women in borderland societies in the Illinois Country (modern Illinois/Missouri). By examining what physical goods were considered feminine, she aims to better understand the nuanced gendered dynamics of power, influence, and agency on the edge of empire in the latter half of the eighteenth century. This work builds on research she had done during her undergraduate degree with Dr. Robert Englebert at the University of Saskatchewan regarding French colonial migration.
