    Description:

School of Religion - Colloquium Series
Israelites in America: Emotions, Expansion, and the Missionary Project in the Early U.S.

In the early United States (1790-1850), a widely-circulated theory proposed that Indigenous people were, somehow or other, Jewish. In this presentation, Dr. Matthew Dougherty will discuss how both settler and Indigenous intellectuals used this idea to propose Christian nationalisms that contested U.S. expansion. The talk will include an overview of this ongoing research and a discussion of problems it raises in the study of emotion and material religion.
