The Office of the Vice-Principal (Culture, Equity, and Inclusion) invites you to the third event in our five-part Re-Imagining Academia speaker series:
Topic: Intersecting Identities and Mental Health: Culturally Informed Strategies for Supporting Marginalized Students
Presenter: Dr. Arunima Khanna, Psychologist (Cross-Cultural), Queen’s University
Moderator: Jermaine Marshall, Inclusion and Anti-Racism Advisor, Human Rights & Equity Office, Queen’s University.
In today’s increasingly diverse academic environments, understanding the relationship between intersecting identities and mental health is important for fostering inclusive and supportive learning spaces. This session will examine how factors such as race, gender, sexuality, disability, and socioeconomic status intersect to influence the mental health experiences of marginalized students in educational institutions. Through an equity-informed lens, Dr. Khanna will highlight culturally responsive strategies and practical approaches to mental health support that reflect the realities faced by students navigating multiple systems of oppression. The session will provide actionable insights on creating affirming, accessible, and inclusive support systems rooted in cultural humility and anti-oppressive practices.
