Ingenuity Labs Presents: Jack Caldwell, Automation and the New Frontier: How Canada's Largest Space Developer is Creati
11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Round two in the race to the Moon has begun. Large investments have been dedicated to
developing a permanent Lunar output as a part of the Artemis program. Canadian companies
are positioning themselves to be fundamental contributors to this economy. In particular,
MDA, Canada's largest space company, is developing robotic solutions to support space
infrastructure and the burgeoning economy therein.
This talk will describe some of the challenges faced and technologies in development to meet
the extreme needs of deep space exploration. First, I will discuss the AI-enabled nextgeneration
Canadarm, which is designed for autonomous operations orbiting around the moon
on the lunar Gateway station, and the unique constraints and considerations of the cislunar
environment. Then, I will consider the challenge of generating energy on the Lunar surface,
with a sneak peak of an early concept design. At the end of this talk, you will walk away with
a high-level understanding of some of the technical challenges faced in space robotics and the
exciting prospects that lie ahead.
