Department of Philosophy Colloquium Series - Dr. David Murakami Wood
4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
The Department of Philosophy Colloquium Series presents
Dr. David Murakami Wood (³ÉÈË´óƬ, Sociology)
"After the Authoritarian Turn: The Long Run to Planetary Surveillance"
This presentation is an exercise in speculative socio-political theory that asks what comes after the current global turn to authoritarianism. It considers this turn as rooted in an inability to face up to emerging planetary issues in Global North nation-states, in particular the decline of the American Empire, climate change and mass migrations, a phenomenon that adds to an already widespread authoritarian situation in the nation-state of the post-colonial Global South. It then proposes and critiques three possible trajectories: multiplying and deepening fragmentation and authoritarianisms; the return of neoliberalism on a planetary scale; and new forms of platform authoritarianism emerging from surveillance capitalism. Finally, it asks what kinds of alternatives are possible through the rediscovery of collective desires at the planetary scale.
