This course explores the three interconnected genres of science fiction, fantasy and horror from the medieval period to the modern age, looking at fairy tales, monsters, cyborgs, and time travel, among other things. As we read, we will examine the way the narratives represent gender, the body, the alien and the human. We will explore how these stories embody fears, both universal, and particular to their age, sometimes reinforcing cultural norms, sometimes challenging them, but always liberating our imaginations.
