Abstract:

Editors take responsibility for discerning written work that merits publication in the journals or collections we oversee, as well as for the clarity and coherence of the texts we publish. But, as crucial discussions about uneven power relations in academia have made clear the terms in which those responsibilities are articulated are far from politically neutral, and to treat them as if they are perpetuates systemic inequities through routine publishing processes. In this talk, I speak from my experience as the editor of a journal in eighteenth-century literary studies, as well as from my knowledge as a woman of color who specializes in empire and anticolonialism from the eighteenth century to the present, to consider the social and political grammars of relation that editors are positioned to cultivate. I offer some new models of relation that imagine editorial practice well away from systems of exclusion, policing, and accumulations of cultural capital.
