Leadership starts with mentorship. Step up and become a guiding force for others!
Are you a student in the Undergraduate Online Career at Queen’s University seeking a rewarding way to make a lasting impact while enhancing your own university experience? We invite you to become a Peer Mentor and inspire the success of your fellow students.
Why Volunteer as a Peer Mentor?
As an experienced student, you possess invaluable insights that can help others navigate their university journey. Here's why you should volunteer as a Peer Mentor:
- Share Your Expertise: Put your knowledge to good use by guiding and mentoring students who can benefit from your unique insights.
- Make a Difference: Empower the next generation of students to excel academically, personally, and professionally.
- Develop Leadership Skills: Hone your leadership, communication, and mentoring skills, which are valuable assets for your future career.
- Personal Growth: Continue your personal development journey as you support others in theirs.
- Give Back: Pay it forward and contribute to the growth and success of your university community.
Mentor Responsibilities:
- Provide academic support to one or more fellow online students (mentees).
- Initiate monthly check-ins with mentees and offer support as needed.
- Attend mandatory online training sessions to enhance your mentoring skills.
- Maintain open and regular communication with the Student Engagement Lead about your progress.
- Dedicate 1-3 hours per week to this program.
Mentor Boundaries:
While mentors are here to guide and empower students, there are certain things they are not responsible for:
- Offering assignment feedback: Mentors aim to empower students to improve their skills but do not directly influence assignment content or quality.
- Acting as course tutors: Mentors provide non-judgmental academic support but may not possess expertise in specific course materials.
- 24/7 Availability: Mentors have their own commitments and may not always be available; communication should be coordinated and respectful of their time.
- Replacing Academic Advisors: Mentors complement the role of academic advisors but do not replace them. They can offer additional support and insights.
Remember, a successful mentorship is based on understanding these roles and boundaries. Open and clear communication ensures a positive and productive relationship between mentors and their mentees.
