HIST 257 Environmental History Units: 3.00
A global survey of the effects of human activity on our physical surroundings and vice versa, in pre-agricultural, agricultural and industrial/agricultural societies. The course will be organized topically and themes will include the relevant problems of historical method, and the history of human attitudes to nature.
Learning Hours: 120 (36 Lecture, 84 Private Study)
Requirements: Prerequisite Level 2 or above.

Course Learning Outcomes:
- Reflect on varying conceptions of the subject of the course and its links to disciplines outside History.
- Analyze links between critical problems of the present and human experiences of past eras.
- Comprehend and explain critiques of anthropocentrism and the concept of the Anthropocene.
- Identify and select sources suitable for informing a term essay.
- Articulate a persuasive argument in writing and a brief oral presentation in class.
